Baan Don marks Sart Duen Sip with a colourful temple procession
On October 4, Wat Thepkrasattri, better known locally as Wat Baan Don, hosted one of Phuket’s most recognisable Tenth Lunar Month rites. The streets in Baan Don filled with a procession of decorated jad offerings, turning an ordinary Saturday into a shared community ceremony.
What happened
Community groups, nearby villages, businesses and government offices carried ornate jad structures to the temple for merit-making. The procession included pret figures, dolls, cartoon characters and figures from Thai literature, all prepared over several weeks for the annual observance.
Why locals care
Sart Duen Sip is not a stage show. It is a family and neighbourhood tradition built around remembrance, gratitude and giving. People bring food, sweets and offerings, then gather to honour deceased ancestors and pass the custom to younger generations.
What comes next
Phuket’s October festival rhythm continues elsewhere too, including Wat Kathu, where the annual observance runs through October 8. For residents, that means more temple activity, more procession days and a very local kind of island atmosphere.
