Phuket hosts more than 5,000 U.S. Navy personnel in a short but noticeable surge
From 4 to 9 October, Phuket is seeing a short but very visible port visit as 5,109 U.S. Navy personnel come ashore.
What is happening
Two aircraft carriers, including USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77), are anchored about 1.78 nautical miles — roughly 3.3 kilometers — from Phuket Deep Sea Port in Wichit. The sailors are on shore leave and are spending their days across the island, dining out, taking taxis and joining short sightseeing trips.
Why it stands out
For Phuket, a few days like this quickly show up in the everyday economy. Restaurants, cafes, drivers, guides, tour operators, shops and service businesses around the center, Patong and the main beach areas all get a lift. This is not one big show or festival; it is a multi-thousand-person flow that spreads across the island right away.
What has been arranged
Local authorities and partners have already coordinated safety, traffic and general assistance. For the servicemen, one simple rule applies: they are not allowed to ride motorcycles or travel as motorcycle passengers. No off-limits areas have been set, so movement around the island is happening in a normal tourist rhythm.
What locals and visitors may notice
Popular dining spots are likely to feel busier, transfer demand may rise, and evening tours and rides can get a little fuller than usual. For people living on Phuket, it is another clear week when the island runs at full pace and a major anchorage quickly turns into real spending on the ground.
