Phuket ramps up flood prep as heavy rain and rough seas approach
Phuket is stepping up flood prep: canals and drains are being cleared, pumps checked, and crews kept on standby in low-lying areas.
What’s happening
The island is moving into one of the rainiest parts of the season, and local authorities have again shifted into high-alert mode. The focus is on Phuket Town, Rawai and Patong, where roads and neighbourhoods can flood quickly after sustained downpours.
Phuket Town has updated its response plan, with canal dredging, drain clearing, pump inspections and round-the-clock monitoring in the areas most prone to waterlogging.
Where the risk is higher
Watch low-lying streets, canal-side communities, older built-up areas and places with narrow drainage corridors. In Rawai, some drainage channels were found to be only about 1.5 metres wide, which slows water flow and keeps roads wet long after storms pass.
In Patong, officials also inspected a private construction site in Soi Song Phan to help prevent repeat flooding nearby.
What about the sea
Marine warnings have also tightened. On the west coast, small boats and recreational trips could face rougher conditions, even when the rain onshore looks manageable.
What residents and visitors should do
- avoid parking in low-lying spots and near canals;
- leave extra travel time;
- do not drive through standing water;
- skip small-boat trips when warnings are in effect;
- check district-level updates, not just the island-wide forecast.
The practical move now is simple: don’t wait until water is already on the road. Adjust plans early.
