Phuket tightens food, waste and traffic checks before the Vegetarian Festival
Phuket City Municipality stepped up checks on food stalls, shrine kitchens, waste handling and traffic on October 1 ahead of the Vegetarian Festival, which runs from October 10 to 18, 2026.
What is changing before opening day
At a press briefing at Pud Jor Shrine, city officials outlined the main pressure points for festival week: shrine kitchens, vegetarian food vendors, waste collection, public order and traffic control in Phuket Town.
This year's festival is expected to draw a large crowd, so the city is preparing for a busy nine-day stretch rather than treating it as a routine event.
What residents will notice
The biggest everyday effects will be food and traffic. Around Old Town and the shrine areas, there will be more people, more temporary stalls and more short stops by vehicles. Drivers should expect slower movement near procession routes, while pedestrians will likely see more barriers and detours.
Waste is another key focus. Processions and rituals create a lot of rubbish in a short time, especially where street food and ceremonial firecrackers are involved. The city is preparing collection points and equipment in advance so the mess does not spill into normal street life.
What to do now
If you live or work in central Phuket, check your route before October 10. If you plan to eat from street vendors, choose busy, orderly stalls. If you're heading to Old Town in the evening, leave extra time: traffic will almost certainly be slower during festival days.
For Phuket, this is practical preparation for one of the island's busiest weeks of the year.
