Phuket locks in PorTor dates as Old Town prepares for its big late-summer festival
From Aug. 25 to Sept. 10, Phuket Town will again move to the rhythm of PorTor Festival, one of the island’s most recognisable Thai-Chinese celebrations. The dates are set, and Old Town is about to fill with shrine rites, street food and evening visits across the historic centre.
The festival honours ancestors and wandering spirits, but on Phuket it has long been more than a ritual calendar item. PorTor brings families, locals, visitors and casual walkers back into the city core for a few weeks of living heritage rather than a staged performance.
Where the main events are happening
This year’s programme is spread across several Phuket Town locations: Talat Yai and Phuket Thai Hua Museum on Krabi Road, Hok Nguan Kong Shrine near Surin Circle, Cho Ong Shrine, Baan San Market on Ranong Road, Seng Tek Beow Kuan Yin Tai Si Shrine in Bang Neow, Kian Tek Pho Chinese Association and Ao Ke Community near Takua Pa Road. That makes the festival easy to explore on foot, one stop at a time.
What to look for
The signature PorTor treat is the red turtle-shaped Ang Ku cake, usually made from glutinous rice flour and filled with sweet bean paste. The turtle shape stands for longevity and good fortune, while the cake itself has become one of the festival’s strongest visual symbols.
Visitors can also expect offerings of incense, food and paper gifts, plus shrine ceremonies that show how deeply the tradition is woven into Phuket’s Thai-Chinese heritage.

For residents, it is a chance to take part in a tradition that still feels close to family life. For visitors, it is one of the best excuses to spend an evening in Phuket Old Town rather than on the beach. If you go, allow extra time for parking, walking between venues and larger crowds around the city-centre shrine zones.
