Phuket Vegetarian Festival starts islandwide as Go Teng poles go up
Phuket raised Go Teng poles at shrines across the island on the evening of October 9, officially opening the Vegetarian Festival.
From that moment, Phuket enters a nine-day cycle of rituals, prayers, processions and shrine ceremonies, running from October 10 to 18 in 2026. This is not just a calendar event: it is the island’s biggest cultural season of the year and it changes the daily rhythm around Phuket Town and shrine districts.
What happened
The opening ceremony at Jui Tui Tao Bo Keng Shrine included the traditional pole raising, a symbolic call for deities to descend and join the festival. Similar rituals took place at Chinese shrines across the island.
What to expect next
The first major street processions began on October 11. That is when roads around major shrines become busier, especially in and around Phuket Town, and travel times can stretch well beyond normal.
If you live on Phuket, work here, or are visiting, it helps to plan routes with shrine locations in mind. Morning visits, food stops and evening rituals can all slow local movement, even on short trips.
Keep in mind
- The festival runs until October 18.
- The heaviest street impact is around Phuket Town and shrine communities.
- Traffic near processions may move slowly.
- White clothing is the most common dress code among participants.
For visitors, it is one of the best times to see Phuket’s cultural identity in full view. For residents, it is the week to check routes before leaving home.
