Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival opens this weekend with the ritual pole raised on Friday night
Phuket is about to enter its most recognizable autumn week: the Go Teng pole goes up on the evening of 9 October, and the Vegetarian Festival runs from 10 to 18 October.
What happens next
This is more than a date on the calendar. The bamboo pole ceremony opens the festival at Chinese shrines, and the following day the island moves into nine days of rituals, processions and temple visits.
Where the activity will be
The main action will be in Phuket Town and the older Chinese shrines, especially Jui Tui, Bang Neow and Kathu. Expect devotees in white, street food stalls serving vegetarian dishes, and long morning processions through the shrine areas.
Why locals should care
For residents, this is the week when familiar routes can slow down and traffic around the old town becomes busier. If you live or work nearby, leave extra time for travel.
Best time to go
To catch the opening, go on the evening of 9 October. For processions and street atmosphere, plan outings from 10 to 18 October, especially in the mornings.
