Phuket lines up 70 flood shelters for 27,720 people
Phuket has lined up 70 temporary shelters for up to 27,720 people as the island braces for another round of heavy rain and possible flooding.
Help points are already mapped
Authorities have identified 66 flood-prone locations across the island: 37 in Mueang Phuket, 12 in Kathu and 17 in Thalang. For residents, that means the main response points are already tied to specific neighbourhoods instead of being assembled at the last minute.
More than 8,000 sandbags, 41 pumps and water-propulsion units have been prepared. Officials also identified 133,461 vulnerable people who may need help or evacuation if conditions worsen.
What has been reinforced
In Phuket Town, canals, drainage pipes and obstructions were cleared at 75 locations. Improvements were also made near the Khlong Hua Khuan bridge in Kamala and under Phra Metta Road near Marina Hotel in Patong.
Islandwide, 27 fixed pumps and six high-capacity mobile pumps are ready, along with eight water-propulsion units positioned at five critical points. Local administrations, police, military personnel and volunteers are standing by.
What people should expect
Warnings can go out through Cell Broadcast, 19 warning towers, public address systems and the province’s online channels. The message for residents and visitors is straightforward: keep an eye on alerts, avoid low-lying flood-prone roads during heavy rain and be ready for temporary disruption.
Phuket has also set up a provincial incident command centre for floods, storms and mudslides. The island is not guessing where the weak points are anymore; it has already mapped them and put a response structure around them.
