Phuket Vegetarian Festival processions begin on October 11

Phuket now has a date locals can plan around: the first major street processions of Vegetarian Festival 2026 begin on Sunday, October 11.

The official festival guide is out, removing the biggest uncertainty for residents, workers and visitors. The festival starts on the evening of October 9, runs for nine days, and ends on October 18.

What starts first

On the evening of October 9, Chinese shrines across the island will raise Go Teng poles, marking the invitation for the Jade Emperor and the Nine Emperor Gods to descend. After that, Phuket moves into a packed rhythm of rituals, vegetarian observance and processions.

The first major street day is October 11. The earliest processions are scheduled from 7:00am, with additional evening rituals in Kamala and other districts.

Where it will be most visible

The processions will affect almost the whole island, especially Phuket Town and shrine communities. The schedule already includes street processions, fire-walking, bridge-crossing ceremonies and other rites through October 18.

For drivers, this means real delays rather than a symbolic festival. Anyone living, working or travelling through central Phuket should leave extra time and check routes in advance.

Practical takeaway

The main date to remember now is October 11, when street logistics on the island visibly change. October 9 marks the opening rituals, and October 18 the close of the festival cycle.

If you need to pass through Phuket Town, shrine areas or roads used by processions, plan ahead.
