Phuket Vegetarian Festival reaches its peak: 140,000 visitors and 1.4 billion baht

Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival is now in its busiest stretch: the Go Teng pole was raised at 5:09 p.m. on October 9, officially opening the festival, and processions are running from October 11 to 18.

For the island, this is more than a ceremonial calendar item. For nine days, shrines across Phuket keep their own pace, while Phuket Town and nearby streets shift into festival mode.

What is happening now

The festival runs from October 9 to 18, 2026. Main rituals are taking place at more than 40 Chinese shrines across the island, while street processions are scheduled from October 11 to 18. Night processions are one of this year’s standout features, adding a stronger evening atmosphere.

More than 140,000 visitors are expected, and the event is projected to generate at least 1.4 billion baht in local economic activity. Hotel bookings in Mueang Phuket are already about 10% higher than last year, while average occupancy in the main festival area may reach 80%.

What it means in daily life

If you live or work in Phuket Town, allow extra time for evening travel. Roads near shrines can slow down during procession hours, and parking in the center fills quickly.

If you want to watch the processions, arrive early. The busiest spots are usually the main intersections and shrine approach roads. For visitors, this is one of the clearest ways to see Phuket as a living Chinese-Thai island with a strong local rhythm.

The key dates are already set: street processions begin on October 11, and the festival ends on October 18.
