Phuket Town steps up food and traffic checks ahead of the Vegetarian Festival
Phuket Town has stepped up checks on shrine kitchens, vegetarian food stalls, waste removal and street traffic before the Vegetarian Festival.
The festival runs from 10 to 18 October 2026, and the city services have already moved the area into a tighter control mode. For residents, that means more inspections and a more organised space around the shrines where vendors, devotees and visitors will gather.
What is being checked
The main focus is on kitchens at shrines, street vendors selling vegetarian food, and the cleanliness of the sites themselves. Inspectors will look at food storage and preparation, and will randomly collect samples of raw ingredients and vegetables for testing. Vendors are also being asked to provide bins and separate organic waste on site.
Where it will be most visible
Shrine cleaning is also under way. The programme covers Jeng Ong, Lim Hu Tai Su, Kiu Thian Keng at Saphan Hin, Bang Niew, Sui Bun Tong, Jui Tui Tao Bo Keng, Pud Jor, Sam Se Ju Hud and Mae Ya Nang. The city is also preparing an area at Nawamin 72nd Anniversary Plaza on Phuket Rd, where people can gather during the Iew Keng processions from 11 to 18 October.
What it means in practice
If you live, work or travel through Phuket Town on those dates, allow extra time for roads and parking near the shrines. During procession days, streets around the shrine districts will be busier than usual, with added movement around popular food and ritual points.
For visitors coming for the atmosphere, the upside is simple: the city is making the festival cleaner, clearer and easier to navigate.
