Phuket’s northern gateway: what the road-widening plan could change
Phuket has entered a new stage of planning for a project that could reshape how people enter the island and how they choose property in the north.
What happened
Authorities are advancing survey and design work for a 2.27 km section of Route 402, running from Thepkrasattri Bridge through Tha Chatchai to the Phuket Check Point. Several options are under review, including a four-lane layout with different median designs and even an elevated section. The study also covers drainage, bridge works, junction improvements and environmental assessment.
Why it matters for property
For Phuket, the northern gateway is more than a road. It is the main traffic filter for the airport corridor, Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Sakhu, Thalang and the way toward Bang Tao. If access becomes faster and more predictable, the benefit is not only for tourists but also for year-round residents and landlords targeting long-stay tenants.
For investors, that is important in projects near the airport and along the northwest coast. In those areas, buyers care not only about beach access but also about the daily route to schools, supermarkets, clinics and the main island exit.
What buyers should watch
- More focus on livability, not just holiday appeal.
- Stronger appeal for locations with clear road access and established services.
- Better liquidity for units and villas with easy entry and exit.
What to check next
The project is still in the planning and consultation phase, so construction timing remains open. But the signal is already positive: Phuket keeps investing in core infrastructure, and that usually supports real demand.
If you are looking at the north of the island, study the real transport map: airport timing, seasonal congestion and how easy it is to reach Phuket Town and the beaches. Those details often separate a strong asset from a merely attractive one.
